I decided to adopt a black lab because I want to start hiking in the spring...and Sadie is a little froufrou for that. So, I wanted a bigger dog that could protect me and handle the hikes. Well, Layla became very sick three days after I got her. I had to take her to the emergency vet on Sunday. She had parvo. Parvo is a very dangerous and deadly virus to dogs. I transferred her from the emergency vet Monday morning to our regular vet. She died the following Thursday. I visited every afternoon and spent time with her...but she was very weak. She was a rescue and wasn't in top shape to begin with. So, my $30 rescue pup turned into a couple of thousand dollar pup. She is now buried in my yard.
I now have a new lab. She is 8 months old. She, too, was a rescue. She is a wonderful dog. Her name was Katie...but I haven't liked very many Katies in my life...so I changed her name to something that was similar. I named her Kayse. Kayse is super well behaved and I am excited to take her on the trail. I'm going to try to start obedience courses with her next month and get her ready for the spring.
I have a new vehicle. I traded in my Solara for a Journey. I wanted to get another vehicle that would work well for hikes with Kayse. I am very happy with my choice of new vehicle. It has some neat features that I will like when it comes time to start hiking. There is an area that is made to be a drink cooler...you can put two bottles/cans in it and it has a valve that pushes cold air into the compartment to keep them cold. There are two built in ice chests/storage areas built in the floorboards of the back seats. Then the cargo area in the back has a huge underfloor storage area. The floor also folds up and can be turned over to where there is no carpet in the back...this will be perfect if Kayse and our gear gets muddy. So, I'm all geared up for hiking in the spring...at least vehicle and dog wise... Oh...and have you heard of geocacheing? I want to try to get into that...have heard it mentioned through several different medias. Hmmm....
I have made a few changes in my life lately. I was started to cut out a lot of things. I'm trying to live a much simpler life. I want to read, write, reflect, hike, spend time with friends and family, get plugged in with the community.... I've taken steps to tone down and de-clutter my life. I don't know what life will actually look like for me on the other side of this door that I've started to walk through...but so far...I like it.
We just had Christmas...I had a great time with my family. This will be the last year that all of us will be in the same household on Christmas.....let's keep our fingers crossed...lol. Mom and Dad seemed to be ultra aware of this and tried to make this year special. Hopefully, Zach will be out of the house by then. He already has his house...he's just trying to remodel it...it needed a lot of work. He says he will be out at the end of January. I hope so...I just want to be settled. I am not a happy camper when I feel like I am in limbo...and I am definitely in limbo at the house right now. Anyways, so...Mom and Dad seemed to try to make an extra good Christmas. Zach really liked the beertender I got him, lol. I knew that he would. My dad thought that it was a crazy idea...but he loved it. I love my Kindle. It's the digital reader from Amazon. It is unbelievable. I am totally in love with it...I get the newspaper delivered to it every morning... I can get magazine subscriptions on it... I have a Bible and some resources on there to do my devotionals.... I have some of my favorite classics downloaded on there ( right now I'm reading Anna Karenina, again). When I get paid at the end of January...I can buy some more downloads....reading is so much cheaper. You can buy the digital version of the book for a fraction of the costs. Therefore, I'm not throwing away money on books that I never finish cause I don't like it or books that I'll only read once... if I read a book that I am in love with and want to add to my collection...then I can go buy it. My parents, also, bought me a TV since Zach will be taking the one out of the basement when he moves. Mom really liked her ring that we all chipped in to buy for her and Dad was excited that he got his "truck driver" GPS.
I made it to Christmas Midnight Mass this year. No, I'm not Catholic. I love experiencing new cultures and religions (hence my minor in religious studies). I have always been told that I should go to the Christmas Midnight Mass...that it is a huge and grand display. However, I think I went to the wrong place for that. It was just an average service. I had a few mishaps....like snickering when they sang the word ass in a Christmas hymn...or forgetting that the people behind me were kneeling so when I would go to sit in my chair...I would almost run into them.... I'm sure they were annoyed. My dad went with me. He likes experiencing new things like that, as well. So, that was a fun thing to do with him. I think that the Catholic church that I went to might not be very traditional....because there wasn't anything "special" about the mass....so I think next year I'll try maybe the monastary or something.... We'll see. i think my next religious experience will be a Hindu temple. There is one in Riverdale that I've heard is very pretty and are welcoming to visitors.
Anyways, that's pretty much it I guess. I have the rest of this week off...then it's back to the real world. It's going to be kickin at work to prepare for the state tests...I'm not looking forward to that.
